Two mortisers

Built for production boring, these machines have been stripped of their hold down devices, and their spindles have been re-fitted with a standard drill chuck. Brad-point drill bits are used in boring operations that are part of the process of doweling.

Mortises are cut on these same machines with center-cutting end mill bits. This method is slower than with the use of a router based system, but it is much quieter. Also, the wide range of dimensions available with end mills allows flexibility in chosing a good balance in joinery.

Faced with the necessity of being productive, graduates of the program have retrofitted these machines with a commercially available table that has a hold down and moves on x and y axes.
